The Weirdest Comedy Ever To Receive An Oscar Nomination

It only seems appropriate to reflect on some of the most iconic nominees as the Oscars 2023 draw closer. Or the most bizarre in this instance, Home Alone. Home Alone has undoubtedly remained a classic since Macaulay Culkin's character Kevin McCallister said, "I made my family disappear," in the movie. It's safe to say the franchise was effective since there were a total of six films and a ton of memorable quotes. The Christmas-themed 1990 film appears to be about the McCallister family's vacation in Paris. Instead, it focuses on their youngest son Kevin attempts to safeguard their home when he is left alone at home.

Overall, the film performed quite well for itself. Home Alone was not well received at first, but it quickly became a household classic. Home Alone was the third-highest-grossing movie of all time when it concluded playing in theaters. Given this, it is not surprising that the film received not one, but two Academy Awards nominations. But was Home Alone an Oscar winner?

Sadly, Home Alone did not win an Oscar.

Given everything it had going for it at the time, an Oscar victory for Home Alone wouldn't have been out of the ordinary. Sadly, though, that was not the situation. The 1991 film received nominations in two categories: Best Original Song for John Williams and Leslie Bricusse's Somewhere in My Memory and Best Original Score for John Williams.

While the film was unsuccessful in winning any Oscars, it did win other accolades. The American Comedy Awards category for Funniest Actor in a Motion Picture went to Culkin. He even won the Most Promising Actor prize from the Chicago Film Critics Association. The Kids' Choice Award for Best Movie went to the film itself. Songwriter Williams did, however, succeed in winning a BMI Film & TV Award in the Film Music Award division. Along with all of these, Home Alone was nominated for two Grammy awards and two Golden Globe awards, but neither went well.

Which films won more Oscars than Home Alone?

Despite all the chatter surrounding the Oscars, Home Alone was not a winner. Naturally, people are curious about which films received the prestigious award. John Barry won the award for the best original score for the film Dances With Wolves. Then, American Crime Comedy Dick Tracy won for Stephen Sondheim's song Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man) as the best original music. Home Alone undoubtedly earned something nearly as valuable — the love of families everywhere — even though it may not have won an Oscar.
